Preview of UFC 208: Holm vs de Randamie

UFC 208 Holly Holm Germaine de Randemie Anderson Silva Derek Brunson Jim Miller Dustin Poirier Ronaldo Souza Tim Boetsch and the MMA DnA podcast’s Andrew Chapados makes a guest appearance at MMA Files with a preview and predictions for the top fights at UFC 208: Holm vs de Randamie.

UFC 208 will be a grand event; The Barclays Center in Brooklyn will host the second major UFC event in the Boroughs and the card will introduce the Women’s Featherweight Division via former Bantamweight Champion Holly Holm vs. Germaine de Randamie.

The main card opens with #10 Dustin Poirier (coming off a quick KO loss to Michael Johnson) against a surging Jim Miller. Miller, who was seemingly on his way out as recently as March, 2016 (after losing four of five), finds himself on a three-fight win streak toppling Gomi, while earning decision victories over Lauzon and Thiago Alves.

I see Miller being too strong both physically and with his chin game for Poirier, who has failed all his major tests (Korean Zombie, Swanson, McGregor, Johnson) save for a young Max Holloway. Miller wins via decision.

#3 Jacare v Boetsch

Ronaldo ‘Jacare’ Souza has been campaigning for a title shot for what seems like forever but a loss to Yoel Romero certainly set his plans back. At 37, his time needs to be now.

Standing in his way however is another veteran (36) in Tim Boetsch who, with a 20-10 record is going through a resurgence. ‘The Barbarian’ had lost six of eight between late 2012 and early 2016, but in July and November returned to form with two great knockout performances.

I’m going out on a limb and calling for a Tim Boetsch win via 3rd round TKO.

#7 Silva v Brunson #8

On one hand you can ask ‘Why the hell is this fight happening?’ but then the most obvious answers are likely correct. Anderson Silva will once again risk his legacy (if it isn’t already tarnished) against Brunson who likely sees this both as his dream fight and a winnable one. The Spider hasn’t won since 2012, while Brunson had his five-fight streak stopped in November by Robert Whittaker via 1st rd TKO down under.

Sadly, I don’t see Anderson winning; if his head can survive a thrashing it could go the distance, otherwise expect a Brunson TKO win.  After UFC 208, Silva will get his fat stack of cash and Brunson will swap rankings with the legend.

Holm v de Randamie

Germaine de Randamie has ‘bodied’ her competition as the kids say, and this is one of the reasons I think she will be too much of a force for THE Holly Holm. Holm of course is 10-2, having lost her last two against Tate and Shevchenko.

But UFC 208 is for all the marbles, the new marbles, and the new Women’s Featherweight Title. But as much as Holm is used to the spotlight by now, my gut is telling me de Randamie has more drive and more toughness right now, and that Holm is on the downswing.

I won’t rule out a Holm win, but I’ll draw a line in the sand and say the slightly younger de Randamie wins by decision.
