Promotional tales: Translating Dana White
By Felipe Vasquez 26/12/16 Views
Dana White is the expert in the getting people to tune in for UFC events and the UFC would not be the powerhouse it is today without his hard work. At times it is hard to make sense of some of his comments. Let Felipe Vasquez help you out.
Recently UFC President Dana White was on the Michael Kay Show on ESPN Radio and gave a fascinating interview. The most thought-provoking points were transcribed by MMA Fighting’s Jed Meshew. Struggling to understand what he was trying to say? For your convenience I have gone to the effort of translating White’s quotes.
Dana White: Nate Diaz is a 170 pounder. He is a massive guy. Conor is a very talented guy, he’s very, very good. Every time he goes out there he looks better.
Felipe Vasquez: Nate Diaz is a natural 155 pounder. Diaz has spent the majority of his career in this weight class and we look forward to his next fight in this division. His height and reach is what makes a fight with Conor McGregor at lightweight, so intriguing.
DW: We should have never have done it (McGregor vs Diaz) in the first place.
FV: It was absolutely the best thing we ever did for the UFC’s business.
DW: They wanted to do it, we did it. They wanted to do it again, we did it again. They’re 1-1.
FV: This means it is even and there is absolutely no way we don’t want to find out who wins the rubber match. This trilogy will break the PPV record, live gate, etc, etc.
DW: There is only so many of those wars you can be in in your career and it takes a lot out of you. Some guys go into wars like that and they are never the same afterward again.
FV: These wars are what has made the UFC what it is and when Conor fights Nate for the lightweight title it is going to be wild.
DW: Rory MacDonald was never the same after the Robbie Lawler fight. That fight ruined him. I don’t want to do that to someone special like Conor McGregor. It’s just not right.
FV: We will be keeping Conor well away from Robbie Lawler. We do feel that Conor looks incredible at lightweight and he will be very hard to beat in this division… But we have found an opponent who might test him; Nate Diaz is the one and it will be the best business decision we ever make.
